Section 1031 of the NDAA establishes guidelines to allow U.S. Armed Forces to detain "covered persons" captured during hostilities as unprivileged enemy combatants, pending disposition under the laws of war. The provision defines a "covered person" as a person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This provision also applies to individuals who support al Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners. Section 1032 requires U.S. Armed Forces to hold in custody as an unprivileged enemy combatant any person who is a member or part of al Qaeda or an affiliated entity, and who participated in planning or carrying out an attack or attempted attack against the United States or its coalition partners. The requirement does not extend to citizens of the United States. Also, the Secretary of Defense is authorized to waive required detention. In the very sharpest images there are hints of diffraction rings visible on the edges of the satellites. That is of course the absolute limit of optical performance, and is only rarely attained. You might also be interested in a journal produced by the MIT Lincoln Laboratory - which is the group which has built some of the things you are seeing. Much of what they do is what used to be the Star wars project, which no doubt involves some of your objects. They don't talk about the military satellites, of course, but there are many dicussions of earth surveillance, and related issues. The revelation is the latest twist in an increasingly bizarre story about the disruption of an apparent attempt by al-Qaida to strike at a high-profile American target using a sophisticated device hidden in the clothing of an attacker. The plot, which the White House said on Monday had involved the seizing of an underwear bomb by authorities in the Middle East sometime in the last 10 days, had caused alarm throughout the US. It has also been linked to a suspected US drone strike in Yemen where two Yemeni members of al-Qaida were killed by a missile attack on their car on Sunday, one of them a senior militant, Fahd Mohammed Ahmed al-Quso. But the news that the individual at the heart of the bomb plot was in fact an informer for US intelligence is likely to raise just as many questions as it answers. Citing US and Yemeni officials, Associated Press reported that the unnamed informant was working under cover for the Saudis and the CIA when he was given the bomb, which was of a new non-metallic type aimed at getting past airport security. The informant then turned the device over to his handlers and has left Yemen, the officials told the news agency. The LA Times, which first broke the news that the plot had been a "sting operation", said that the bomb plan had also provided the intelligence leads that allowed the strike on Quso. Earlier John Brennan, Barack Obama's top counter-terrorism adviser and a former CIA official, told ABC's Good Morning America that authorities are "confident that neither the device nor the intended user of this device pose a threat to us". US officials have said the plot was detected in its early stages and that no American airliner was ever at risk. The FBI is conducting forensic tests on the bomb as a first step towards discovering whether it would have cleared existing airport scanning systems. Dianne Feinstein, the Democratic senator for California who heads the Senate intelligence committee, gave an early hint when she said that she had been briefed about the device which she called "undetectable". But AP quoted an unnamed US official as saying current detection methods probably would have spotted the shape of the explosive in the latest device. Just how major an escalation in threat is posed by the bomb remains unclear. Security sources have told news agencies that it was a step up in levels of sophistication from the original underwear bomb that was used in a failed attempt to blow up an airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009. The device used a more refined detonation system, and Brennan said "it was a threat from a standpoint of the design". When it comes to who made the device the focus is on an al-Qaida's offshoot, Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Matthew Levitt, a counter-terrorism expert at the Washington Institute, said that the interception of the plot amounted to a significant achievement for US security agencies. He said: "The FBI is holding the device, which suggests that this was done by having boots on the ground. This was a sophisticated operation that shows we are making in-roads in serious places." Levitt, who was involved as a senior analyst in the FBI's investigation into 9/11, said that it was natural to be sceptical in a presidential election year about security announcements. "But this was not political, it didn't come from the White House and my sense was that it was a really unique success," he said. Levitt said that the spotlight would now be even more intense on Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, AQAP's assumed bomb-making chief, who is thought to be hiding out in Yemen. Consumerism and Gender Roles in America: A Word to the Wives (1955)

Consumerism is a social and economic order that is based on the systematic creation and fostering of a desire to purchase goods or services in ever greater amounts. The term is often associated with criticisms of consumption starting with Thorstein Veblen or, more recently by a movement called Enoughism. Veblen's subject of examination, the newly emergent middle class arising at the turn of the twentieth century, comes to full fruition by the end of the twentieth century through the process of globalization. The term "consumerism" is also used to refer to the consumerist movement or consumer activism, which seeks to protect and inform consumers by requiring such practices as honest packaging and advertising, product guarantees, and improved safety standards. In this sense it is a movement or a set of policies aimed at regulating the products, services, methods, and standards of manufacturers, sellers, and advertisers in the interests of the buyer. In economics, consumerism refers to economic policies placing emphasis on consumption. In an abstract sense, it is the belief that the free choice of consumers should dictate the economic structure of a society (cf. Producerism, especially in the British sense of the term). The term "consumerism" was first used in 1915 to refer to "advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers" (Oxford English Dictionary) but in this article the term "consumerism" refers to the sense first used in 1960, "emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of consumer goods" (Oxford English Dictionary). Anti-consumerism refers to the socio-political movement against the equating of personal happiness with consumption and the purchase of material possessions. The term "consumerism" was first used in 1915 to refer to "advocacy of the rights and interests of consumers" (Oxford English Dictionary) but here the term "consumerism" refers to the sense first used in 1960, "emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of consumer goods" (Oxford English Dictionary). Consumerism is a term used to describe the effects of the market economy on the individual. Concern over the treatment of consumers has spawned substantial activism, and the incorporation of consumer education into school curricula. Anti-consumerist activism draws parallels with environmental activism, anti-globalization, and animal-rights activism in its condemnation of modern corporations, or organizations that pursue a solely economic interest. One variation on this topic is activism by postconsumers, with the strategic emphasis on moving beyond addictive consumerism. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of books (Naomi Klein's 2000 No Logo for example) and films (e.g. The Corporation & Surplus), popularizing an anti-corporate ideology to the public. Opposition to economic materialism comes primarily from two sources: religion and social activism. Some religions assert materialism interferes with connection between the individual and the divine, or that it is inherently an immoral lifestyle. Some notable individuals, such as Francis of Assisi, Ammon Hennacy, and Mohandas Gandhi claimed spiritual inspiration led them to a simple lifestyle. Social activists believe materialism is connected to war, greed, anomie, crime, environmental degradation, and general social malaise and discontent. Fundamentally, their concern is that materialism is unable to offer a raison d'être for human existence. Critics of consumerism include Pope Benedict XVI, German historian Oswald Spengler (who said, "Life in America is exclusively economic in structure and lacks depth"), and French writer Georges Duhamel, who held "American materialism up as a beacon of mediocrity that threatened to eclipse French civilization."

China May Dump US Treasuries and Move to Buy Euro Bonds

A new report says the number of new jobs roughly equaled the number of jobs lost. the length of the average workweek fell slightly to 34 hours. This is the first time a jobs report has come in at zero since February 1945. The AP reports that unemployment for young people is the highest since World War II, and they risk living in poverty more than others - nearly 1 in 5. China has stated their plan to liquidate US treasuries. Their central bank plans to down their portfolio of US debt as soon as possible. Li Daokui at the World Economic Forum say that they intend to move from foreign reserve holdings to physical assets including stakes in Boeing, Intel, and Apple. He said Once the US Treasury market stabilizes they can liquidate more of their holdings.. All this after five of the world's top central banks moved to flood the markets with dollars. The European Central Bank said it will work closely with the Federal Reserve, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, and the Swiss National Bank. Their plan is to offer 3 month loans to banks until the end of the year. The FED has just launched their 'Twist' stimulus initiative....sure to be packed full of lemons... They The Fed plan spend about $400 billion buying back bonds maturing withing 3 years and swapping this for longer-term debt. They claim this will help boost loans and keep interest rates down yet this plan puts no money directly into the economy. The sell-off followed news from the Federal Reserve, which said that it sees "significant downside risks" to the U.S. economy. Australia's dollar reached a 10-month low in response. Gold investment demand in China is likely to top a record 200 metric this year. China is stating that they are willing to Buy Euro Bonds From Sovereign-Debt-Crisis Nations. This is their stated plan to move their foreign-exchange reserves. China is stating their price for an Italian rescue. China has called for major strategic concessions from Europe before agreeing to rescue the eurozone, This ended hopes for immediate purchases of Italian bonds. Premier Wen Jiabao warned that China will not sign a blank cheque for states that have failed to carry out full financial reform and that countries must first put their own houses in order. China has accumulated roughly 800bn euros of eurozone bonds over the last decade and holds about 1.17 trillion in US debt. Following this event, the S & P downgraded Italy's sovereign debt rating by one notch to A from A+. Credit Ratings in Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus, Greece, and the United States have also be cut. China is also wooing the Caribbean with an offer of $1 bln in loans. This is to finance infrastructure projects as it deepens ties in a region historically linked with the United States. The loans will be made available through the state-run China Development Bank China's wooing of the Caribbean is part of a global push by Beijing to promote loans and investment while seeking natural resources and political influence in the developing world from Africa to Latin America. The Chinese are already involved in a $2.6 billion resort project in the Bahamas which broke ground earlier this year. They've also invested more than $1 billion in one of the country's leading ports. Simplifying the visa process for Chinese tourists, or eliminating it entirely, will be a major step for business relations between China and The Bahamas. China is expanding its cities by building massive artificial islands In 2014, when the chain of artificial islands in Longkou Bay is compete, they will comprise an area as big as Manhattan from its southern tip all the way to Central Park, but with vastly more ocean-front property, suitable for ports as well as seaside homes. It will take 300 million cubic meters of earth and stone hauled from a nearby hill to build the islands, or enough material to fill the interior of the Empire State Building 30 times. It is from this base that American aircraft have attacked Iraq and Afghanistan. "This is a shocking, almost incredible story. A government calling itself civilized tricked and expelled its most vulnerable citizens so that it could give their homeland to a foreign power...ministers and their officials then mounted a campaign of deception all the way up to the prime minister." John Pilger Diego Garcia is America's biggest military base in the world, outside the US. There are more than 4,000 troops, two bomber runways, thirty warships and a satellite spy station. The Pentagon calls it an "indispensable platform" for policing the world. Before the Americans came, more than 2,000 people lived on the islands, many with roots back to the late 18th century. There were thriving villages, a school, a hospital, a church, a railway and an undisturbed way of life. The islands were, and still are, a British crown colony. In the 1960s, the government of Harold Wilson struck a secret deal with the United States to hand over Diego Garcia. The Americans demanded that the islands be "swept" and "sanitized". Unknown to Parliament and to the US Congress, the British government plotted with Washington to expel the entire population -- in secrecy and in breach of the United Nations Charter. At first, they starved them of essential supplies; then rumors spread that the islands would be bombed; then the people watched their pets gassed to death before they were herded on to boats and dumped in the slums of Mauritius. Rita, now in her 70s, lost her husband and three of her children following their deportation: "I am a British citizen and they threw us out of our homeland in the name of the Queen." Lizette, in her 70s, says: "My children died from sadness. When we were forced out, she died, the youngest fell ill and the doctor said to me, 'I can't treat sadness'. What they did to us was no different from the treatment of the slaves." Charlesia says: "What hurts most is that we were never told what they were doing with our islands.
